Fingerprinting in Forensic Science

Fingerprints collected from a crime scene, or from items of evidence from a crime, can be used in forensic science to identify suspects, victims and other persons who touched the surface in question. Fingerprint identification emerged as an important system within various police agencies in the late 19th century. This system replaced anthropometric measurements as a more reliable method for identifying persons having a prior record, often under an alias name, in a criminal record repository. The science of fingerprint identification stands out among all other forensic sciences for many reasons because of its superiority and reliability.

Worldwide, fingerprinting has served all governments during the past 100 years to provide accurate identification of criminals. No two fingerprints have ever been found alike in the billions of human and automated computer comparisons. Fingerprints have become the very basis for criminal history foundation at almost every police agency.

The first forensic professional organization, the International Association for Identification (IAI), was established in 1915. It established the first professional certification program for forensic scientists, the IAI's Certified Latent Print Examiner program in 1977, issuing certification to those meeting stringent criteria and revoking certification for serious errors such as erroneous identifications.

Fingerprinting in Forensic Science

Fingerprints remain the most commonly used forensic evidence the world over. In most jurisdictions, fingerprint examination cases outnumber all other forensic examination casework combined. It continues to expand as the premier method for identifying persons, with tens of thousands of persons added to fingerprint repositories daily in America alone - far outdistancing similar databases in growth. Fingerprinting has outperformed DNA and all other human identification systems to identify more murderers, rapists and other serious offenders (fingerprints solve ten times more unknown suspect cases than DNA in most jurisdictions).

Although some reporters and authors claim that fingerprints have long enjoyed a mystique of infallibility, the opposite is true. Fingerprint identification was the first forensic discipline in 1977 to formally institute a professional certification program for individual experts, including a procedure for decertifying those making any investigative errors. Other forensic disciplines later followed suit in establishing certification programs whereby certifications could be revoked for any error found.

Fingerprint identifications lead to far more positive identifications of persons worldwide daily than any other human identification procedure. The American federal government alone effects positive identification of over 70,000 persons. A large percentage of the identifications, approximately 92% of US Visit identifications, are affected in lights-out, no human involved computer identification process with 100% accuracy based on only two fingerprints.

Computer Forensics Help to Solve All Kinds of Crimes

Computer forensics are used in many fields, from legalities involving trade secrets to prevention of computer-related fraud; however, more and more computer forensics are being used to help solve crimes of all kinds. Computer forensics have both obvious and less obvious implications in a criminal court and are a helpful new tool for prosecutors and police alike.

The area of computer data was something that was ignored or under used in court cases for far too long. This was even worse because most criminals are very, very sloppy about their data encryption - they make the game easier for the forensic guys.

This type of forensics use scientific methodology to protect, assess, and analyze computer data. Deleted data may be retrieved or recovered, encrypted or password protected data revealed. Damaged computer hardware can also be salvaged in the pursuit of information and answers by the computer forensics team themselves - there's very little information you can safely hide from them. No matter how damaged the digital media is. Computer forensics consciously work within the rules of evidence set out by the criminal courts, thereby providing law enforcement with viable and admissible evidence within a court of law. Basically if they catch you with something they've done it legally and it will stand up in a court of law as evidence.

Computer Forensics Help to Solve All Kinds of Crimes

Computer forensics are playing a growing role in the US courts, and electronic forensics experts are called upon in a variety of types of criminal cases. Theft, embezzlement, and fraud may all have computer records and evidence that is assessed and analyzed by a forensics specialist - there's very little done in business today that doesn't involve computers at some level.

Even the use of cell phones isn't safe from the forensic guys. Every text message you ever sent, every phone number you ever stored or even any images you ever kept on your cell phone are all items that these guys can undelete and use against you in a court of law. There have been several high profile murder cases examined in the last few years were cell phone forensic evidence played a key role in the prosecution of the criminals. That's right - they were stupid enough to send each other text messages organizing the murder of another human being.

Specifically, computer-related crimes, such as hacking, child pornography, and intellectual property theft are also prosecuted with the aid of computer forensics. Furthermore, these forensic teams aid in the search and prosecution of terrorists who may use computer technology for planning, scheduling, and locating acts of terrorism. This has become especially important after 9/11.

Computer forensics enable prosecutors and police to gain admissible evidence against offenders, whether the offense is corporate embezzlement or child pornography. A good computer forensics specialist can not only preserve data, but also even reclaim deleted or damaged data and pass this information to the courts.

Computer Forensics

Computer forensics is the process of investigating computer systems by collecting and analyzing computer-related evidence and data to determine their illegal or unauthorized involvement in crimes or frauds. This relatively new field is used by law enforcement, military, intelligence agencies, and businesses. Computer evidence processing protocols are scrupulously observed in the process, as the findings should be presented in a court of law.

Not merely confined to computer data recovery alone, computer forensics is a fast-growing investigative technique used by a forensic specialist for retrieving data that has been electronically stored or encrypted on digital media such as a personal or work computer. Law enforcement agencies use computer forensics to gather evidence about a suspect or known criminal. Computer forensics experts can detect rogue employees or contractors who are leaking critical information such as company plans or sensitive customer data.

Many computer forensics professionals learn the techniques on the job in law enforcement or computer security positions. But with the field expanding widely, employers are currently looking for candidates with certificate programs and formal education in computer forensics, which are available from many institutions. The formal education programs offer instructions on pertinent legal issues, computer skills, and forensic tools that they will need while working as computer forensics professionals.

Computer Forensics

They should have extensive knowledge of computer systems and programs and the ability to retrieve information from them. Often, they are required to retrieve data that has been deleted from the device. For this, the specialist makes use of particular computer forensics software and other tools.

As the specialist works with evidence involved in a criminal or civil case, he/she takes particular care to properly document all the work done to the computer and information found from it. No licensure requirements exist for practicing as a computer forensics specialist. However, voluntary credentials should be provided. These are called Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) and the Certified Computer Examiner (CCE). Computer forensics consulting is also a fast-growing field.

Computer forensics has become an integral part of law enforcement agencies, defense forces, corporations, and large institutions as they all deal with computer offences.
